Hello and welcome to Grand Parade,
Grand Parade is a new weekly newspaper focused on Halifax and municipal politics in the HRM. I plan to launch in the first week of May, and the first issue will be available at www.GrandParade.news.
But with Grand Parade, I will try something new, or rather, try to make something old new again. With American oligarchs owning and controlling our media platforms and access to information, I’m going to publish a newspaper, like an actual physical newspaper, so that you can get information about the city of Halifax in physical locations around the city without the influence of American tech billionaires.
But unlike American tech billionaires, I don’t have much money to launch Grand Parade. And I want this publication to be more than just me writing about city hall, but paying freelance journalists (especially if I want to do so fairly) will likely take a bit more money than I’ll have left over after paying the startup capital costs.
Because I don’t want to follow the Vice model of underpaying young journalists to overwork themselves, I’ve decided to open up subscriptions before the paper exists. If you subscribe, I’ll post weekly like this to let you know where the publication is at and when you can expect to see a copy of Grand Parade out in the real world. And once the paper does exist in the real world, if you can’t go pick up a copy, there will also be a digital version of it here for paid subscribers.
Substack (where the online portion of this paper will exist) has an option to let people do a one-time, pay-what-you-can option to support this publication. If you hit the subscribe button below, it’s the “Grand Parader” option. As I’ve mentioned, the start-up costs for this venture are covered, so if you decide to be a Grand Parade founder, your money will only be spent paying local journalists fair wages to write for this publication.

How will those interested be able to pick up copies of the paper?
